Unalaq is Korra’s uncle and a central antagonist in Book 2: Spirits. His alliance with Vaatu leads to the Dark Avatar conflict.
A spiritual authority figure
Unalaq presents himself as someone who understands the spirits and can teach Korra. That starting position matters because the conflict involves trust and authority as well as bending.
The Dark Avatar — Book 2 spoilers
Unalaq merges with Vaatu during Harmonic Convergence. This is the basis for the Dark Avatar description. He is not an earlier incarnation of Korra, and Amon is not another name for him.
Consequences of the conflict
The Book 2 finale changes Korra's relationship with her past lives and the relationship between humans and spirits. Those consequences should be distinguished from the much later catastrophe in Seven Havens.
Adrian LaTourelle voices Unalaq. Use the Dark Avatar explainer for the Raava–Vaatu distinction and the Korra ending guide for what happens at the end of Book 4 rather than Book 2.
