Tenzin — character guide

Why Korra needs him

Korra has already developed other bending skills when airbending becomes the major gap in her training. Tenzin teaches a discipline associated with patience and a spiritual tradition, which creates friction with her more direct instincts.

His family

Tenzin is married to Pema. Their children include Jinora, Ikki, Meelo and Rohan. His siblings are Kya and Bumi. He is a son of Aang and Katara, but he is not their eldest child.

Teacher, parent and inheritor

Tenzin carries the pressure of preserving Air Nomad culture while raising a family and advising Korra. Those responsibilities can pull him in different directions. His role is therefore larger than explaining airbending techniques.

Connection to the new series

Jae and Karthik are Airbenders in Seven Havens. That shared discipline alone does not establish that either is Tenzin's descendant. A family connection needs an explicit story or official source.

Where his story develops

Start with Book 1 for Korra's training and Republic City responsibilities. Later books expand the Air Nation story. Jinora's profile and the seasons guide help follow those developments without confusing the generation of Aang's family with Pavi's era.
